Diplomats say aim is to extend benefit of projects and research to other nations

UAE and Netherlands to focus on water and food security projects ahead of Cop28

Water security will be among key green initiatives taken up by the UAE and the Netherlands ahead of the Cop 28 climate summit in Dubai later this year.

Diplomats from both countries said the work will have a global impact.

Jamal Jama Al Musharakh, the UAE's ambassador in the Netherlands and Gerard Steeghs, the incoming Dutch envoy, told The National about taking on challenges related to water, energy and food.

“When it comes to collaboration with the kingdom of the Netherlands, the focus on water is very important and the next is food security,” Mr Al Musharakh said in an interview at the UAE embassy in The Hague.

Green hydrogen is expected to play a crucial role in catalyzing the ongoing energy transition, and it is necessary to achieve a green gas-neutral economy by 2050.

Saudi Arabia and Netherlands sign MoU to collaborate on green energy

RIYADH: Green hydrogen production has received a boost as Saudi Arabia signed a memorandum of understanding with the Netherlands to cooperate in developing the clean gas and expediting the global pursuit to reduce the carbon footprint.

The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam.

During the event, Abdulaziz bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s energy minister, said that the Netherlands could be the primary destination for transporting hydrogen from renewable energy sources from the Kingdom to Europe.

Exchange programmes planned with the Netherlands aim to sow interest in agriculture

How 'Dutch' AI can help produce a new crop of Emirati farmers

The UAE is taking a leaf out of the Netherlands' book in attempting to persuade young Emiratis to take up farming by using advanced technology – including artificial intelligence – to drum up interest in the agricultural sector.

UAE professors and government officials from the environment and education ministries recently met diplomats, private companies, farmers and academics in the Netherlands to discuss food security before Cop28.

The meetings were part of a series of dialogues to gain knowledge of how the Netherlands has retained its role as the world’s second-largest exporter of agricultural produce after the US.

TenCate Grass Site Visit

On the 10th of May TenCate Grass Middle East opened its doors and invited all of our members for a Behind The Scenes Event.

It was really impressive to see all the efforts the devoted employees of TenCate are making on the terrain of sustainability. By implementing a Zero Waste Landfill management program and the clever reuse of resources, they achieve a landfill diversion rate of 96 %, as per UL ECVP 2799.

We would like to thank Jim McFarlane and his team for making us feel welcome and for taking the time to show us around your production facilities.

Year Of Sustainability Series

Introducing: Year Of Sustainability Series

Leading up to COP28, which will take place in the UAE from 30 Nov - 12 Dec, the year 2023 was announced as the ‘Year of Sustainability’, by President H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Under the theme, Today for Tomorrow, this Year of Sustainability will include nationwide initiatives, activities, and events that draw upon the UAE’s values of sustainability and the legacy of its Founding President, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The Netherlands Business Council UAE embraces the values of sustainability and under its wings, the Dutch Sustainability Group was formed, already years ago.

Together with the Dutch Sustainability Group, the Netherlands Business Council UAE wants to give its members insights into what's happening at governmental level and at the companies of frontrunners when it comes to sustainability. To inspire and raise awareness on environmental issues. These events are part of our Year Of Sustainability Series  and are recognizable by use of the above logo.

Workshop: Understand Climate Change

On Thursday April 27th, our members had the chance to follow the workshop Understand Climate Change, which we hosted together with NGO Climate Fresk. By building our very own Climate Fresk, the causes, and effects of climate change were made visual and easier to understand.

A critical moment in global transformative climate action.

What is COP?

In the three decades since the Rio Summit and the launch of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Conference of the Parties to the Convention (COP) has convened member countries every year to determine ambition and responsibilities and identify and assess climate measures.

The 21st session of the COP (COP21) led to the Paris Agreement, which mobilized global collective action to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C, and to act to adapt to the already existing effects of climate change.
